Medical Transcription Business
What Does a medical transcriptionist do?
A medical transcriptionist transcribes audio dictation from a doctor and put it's into a written format which becomes the legal patient medical record. More about medical transcription business:
What type of skills/experience does one need in this type of business?
One needs to have very good English grammar and punctuation skills. Also, being a good typist with an eye for accuracy is very important. Experience in the field comes with time. However, the foundation for becoming a quality medical transcriptionist begins with a solid and comprehensive education in medical terminology, anatomy, disease processes, laboratory medicine, report formats, and the technological training to be able to use MS Word, FTP (file transfer protocol), digital dictation, and encryption. One must also be very familar with their computer because it is the MTs "tool of the trade."
What type of tools, equipment, software...etc...would one need?
A computer is needed. A basic set of medical references (medical dictionary, drug reference, style manual, multi-specialty word book). A good word processing program like MS Word. A medical spellchecker and word expander software. Then depending on how the dictation is transmitted to the MT possibly a Wav pedal and Wav player software. Medical transcription is one of the lowest start up work at home career opportunities available.
How do you determine what to charge?
If you want to get your own accounts, determining what to charge may vary greatly by area. Some medical transcriptionists may be able to charge between 10-14 cents per line. If an MT works for an MTSO (medical transcription service owner) then the rate of pay is less -6-10 cents per line.
How do you get clients/advertise?
Many MTs send out mailers to local medical offices. An MT can also call local doctor offices and clinics asking what their transcription needs are.
What advice would you give others who want to start a business like this?
Working at home as a medical transcriptionist is an exciting and rewarding career. I would advise strongly looking into a quality education program because that will be the foundation which you will build the rest of your career on.
