Create a Forum

How to Create & Install a Forum on Your Website

There are two basic ways to add a forum to your website. You can have a forum hosted by another site and link to it or you can create a message board on your server. To do this, you’ll need to know a little bit about scripting or be willing to purchase or license a message board script. Let’s take a look at how it’s done:

1. Find a few message board scripts to review. You can do this by using a search engine.

2. If you don’t already have a domain name, get one. You’ll need it for your forum.

3. Check with your host to find out which scripts they support. You don’t want to go through the time and effort to get a forum script only to find out your host doesn’t recognize the language.

4. We should note that some software enables you to lease the script rather than buy it outright. This is usually with the understanding that after a year you will buy the software or discontinue using it.

5. Once you’ve decided on a product and purchased it or leased it, you’ll need to follow their documentation to get it up onto your site. Different products have different specifications. You will probably need to know how to give permissions and upload files onto your server using an FTP program.

Your other option is to have your forum hosted remotely. There are instances where this is free and also paid services. Most of the time the forum address will be your website address followed by the forum. For example, http://yoursebsiteaddress.yourforumhostname.com/

This is quite often the easiest way to get a forum on your website if changing the scripts and permissions isn’t up your alley. Before you decide to have your forum hosted remotely you’ll want to make sure the forum host is reliable, free of bugs, and that it looks professional. Many sites enable you to customize your board, which is important.

Adding a forum to your website is a great way to add value to your visitors and to enhance your search engine optimization. There are a wide variety of options available to website owners and it is recommended that you do your research ahead of time. Make sure, if you’re going to host the forum on your server, that your host recognizes the scripting language before purchasing. If you’re going to have it hosted remotely, take the time to make sure you’re partnering with a reliable company.
