A house cleaning business consists of going to client’s homes and doing a number of chores such as vacuum, dust, clean blinds, maybe even do the regular chores such as changing sheets, scrubbing bathrooms and moping the floors. You may be contracted to come once a month or as often as several times a week depending on your client’s needs. You can choose to do certain chores but not others (though this may limit your # of customers). Additionally, you could do businesses, apartments when people move out, and other weekly/daily rentals.

Get yourself Bonded… this will cover you in case something gets broke while you are in a client’s home. Many will ask if you are bonded before they hire you.
Advertising:
Ads in local papers
Business cards on bulletin boards
Business association meetings
If you can afford it, distribute half sheet flyers to homes and businesses
Get listed in the phone books
Speak with other cleaning services and offer to take their overflow if they are short staffed one day
Website might be nice if you are in a larger city but for smaller towns, most people will hear about you by word of mouth
